PV System For Your Home Solar Needs

Click Here To Learn How To Build Your Own Solar Energy System. Solar energy has been around for quite some time. In fact, now is the best time to get it if you want to cut your electric bill and do your share to protect the environment.

For that to happen, you will need to buy a PV system. This is designed to reduce or eliminate the amount of electricity you purchase from the utility especially when there could be a price increase in the next few months.

The best part about the PV system is that it generates clean electricity which is clean, reliable and renewable since it does not emit any harmful gases into the atmosphere. Just be sure to see about Looking For a Free Homeowner Insurance Quote Online?.

The PV system must be placed in an area that is free from any obstruction otherwise, it will not be able to capture the sun’s rays.  A lot of experts say that the south facing roof is best while the east and west is sufficient. If the roof is not available, it can be mounted on the ground.

You should know that PV systems come in various sizes so you should get the one that matches our electrical needs. If you consume about 6,500 kilowatts a year, then a PV system within the 3 to 4 kilowatt range is right for your home. You can measure this by reviewing your past electric bills and making some projections.

Naturally, the size of the PV system will determine the amount of space needed.  If you do not use that much electricity, 50 square feet may be sufficient. However, a larger system may require a little over 600 square feet. Just remember that a kilowatt of electricity requires an area of 100 square feet.

Solar energy is converted with the help of an inverter since this is what changes direct current to alternating current. You will also need batteries so excess energy may be stored so you can still use solar energy during the evening or during a power outage.

The size of the PV system is also in direct proportion with the cost. Most cost from $9 to $10 per watt and when you include installation, the bill may reach be from $10,000 to $20,000.

The cost of the PV system should not discourage you from investing in solar energy. People who use it are able to get tax rebates and it will also increase the value of your home.  With that, the only thing to do now is to call a reputable solar energy provider.

One other thing you should know about the PV system is that this should also be connected to your grid. For this to work, you have to enter into an interconnection agreement with your utility.

This agreement will address the issue with regards to the terms and conditions under which your system is tied up with them. This also includes what is known as net metering which allows you to bank any surplus electricity that your system generates on the electric grid in the same manner that you will be charged accordingly should you consume more electricity than what you have banked.

You need a PV system to generate solar energy. You just need to know what size of a system you require so this can be installed by your solar provider. And for your car you can visit auto insurance quotes free.

What is the Green Party?

In the United States, the two-party system has been so all-encompassing of American politics as to nearly obliterate all traces of any other option. Recent criticism has been directed at how the two parties are actually the same one, with words like "Republocrat" and "Demican" used as derogatory names for the two main parties. However, a new party has come onto the scene: the Green Party. This party has been gaining acceptance and slowly getting more news coverage. So what is it, and what does it stand for?

The Green Party is based on the principles of Green politics, a political ideology which places importance on ecological and environmentalist issues, while trying to achieve these goals through broad-media-based, grassroots, participatory democracy and decisions made in consensus. Beyond the mere advocacy of environmental causes, they also advocate non-violence and peace, and social and civic liberties. The philosophy is that these issues are inherently related to ecological, social, and human bodily health.

If you remember the posters back in the sixties that said "War is bad for flowers and other living things", that's part of the point - not just about flowers, of course, but that war is bad for people, nations, and the economy, too. That last claim might seem counter-intuitive, because in the past national economies have surged when they were at war. However, the keyword that doesn't apply any more is "national"; this is the 21st century, where the global economy is the dominant reality. This takes the fact of war between nations down to the same effect that a gang war in your neighborhood would have - sort of.

In fact, the "Four Pillars of the Green Party" explains it better. Ecology is not just a matter of choosing "paper or plastic", but a long-term issue which will eventually require the overhaul of our whole society, as a global community. Social justice looks to stamp out every form of discrimination based on distinctions between class, gender, ethnicity, or culture, preferring instead an egalitarian outlook. Grassroots democracy is participatory democracy, and is embraced by Greens as the only reliable governance model; it is possible to cut the bureaucracy from our government models and run things by direct participation through the communications infrastructure. Finally, non-violence reflects the Green's policy of rejecting violence as a means to overcoming its opponents.

In short, the Green party's core beliefs really aren't that new after all. They borrow heavily from leaders such as Gandhi and traditional beliefs of the United States, such as the Quakers who were here to found this country when it began. Furthermore, the movement is also aimed at helping the United States be a better neighbor to the rest of the world, and enter into a spirit of cooperation with nations founded largely on Buddhist and Hindu beliefs. American Christians who reject the religions and beliefs of "foreigners" need look no farther than Jesus Christ's Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew chapters 5-7 - Green party beliefs are actually Christ's teachings as well, albeit forgotten ones in the United States.

Interestingly, almost every nation on Earth with a democratic system now has a Green party established. They have sprung up all over the globe for the past thirty years, with Canada, Peru, Norway, South Africa, Ireland, and Mongolia all having strong Green parties.

However, the uniquely American culture of hostile xenophobia makes the Green party a difficult thing to establish here. The United States is home to some of the most intolerant groups in the world, with declared wars on races, nations, religions, beliefs, and even the most trivial, inconsequential, and harmless practices. Can a nation filled with angry bigots learn to love and coexist in peace with the rest of the world?

If not, we can always take solace that if the rest of the world goes Green, we don't have to worry about a war. After all, Green is non-violent.

Political Terms to Know for the 2008 Election A-K

Bone up on your political jargon with this handy list of political phrases and expressions. While there are many of these, this list may be especially relevant to Presidential Election 2008, so keep an eye out for spotting these concepts as the race unfolds in all its drama!

  • Absurdistan - A satiric term for any country where absurdity is the norm. A funny farm on a national scale. What America may feel like when this election is over.
  • Armchair revolutionary - Related to "armchair quarterback" and "weekend warrior". Now that the Internet has given us an easy way to do a lot of talking online without much action, it's a term more relevant than ever!
  • Blue rinse brigade - It originated in the United Kingdom to describe the elderly middle-class ladies usually of a conservative socio-political persuasion. But it's ready for adoption in America, where seniors are notoriously socially conservative, fiscally liberal, and retired so they have plenty of time to vote and campaign.
  • Bolters - Party members who leave the party for another one as soon as their favorite candidate doesn't win the nomination. Possible usage: "Those Democrats stayed on until they saw Hilary didn't get the Democratic nomination, then they left for the Republican party to go vote for Sarah Palin instead. Those bolters!"
  • Bush Derangement Syndrome - The tendency to blame George W. Bush for every single thing that goes wrong; right-wing pundits used it to describe "loony left" members who were apparently so hysterical they thought Bush caused hurricane Katrina. Now that Bush is leaving office with no incumbent to replace him, even the right-wing may catch a touch of Bush Derangement Syndrome.
  • CAVE People - C.A.V.E. stands for "Citizens Against Virtually Everything". Specifically people who love anything as long as it's established already, but hate change of any kind. As social questions like gay and women's rights and whether to legalize marijuana or stop the Iraq war come into play, count on a comment or two from the CAVE People.
  • Christmas tree bill - A bill that passes through the House and Senate with a lot more unrelated amendments attached than it started with. Typically a small, minor bill, which then gets a new condition such as a favorable vendor or a tax loophole tossed in, and one Congressman after another does this until the bill resembles a tree decorated with ornaments hanging off of it. Also named because it's usually the last bill passed in a hurry before Congress goes home for the Christmas holidays.
  • Crony capitalism - Just thought I'd remind you that this term exists. You aren't supposed to think of any companies that happen to be named "Halliburton", who are making a huge profit from the Iraq war while an ex-executive of their company who's still getting money from them happens to be the out-going Vice-President under the President who declared the Iraq war.
  • Groupuscule - This is a word borrowed from the french to describe the tendency for the far extremes of a political party to break off into tiny little sub-parties over some minor quarrel or extreme view. Usage: "The Popular People's Front is just a groupuscule from the People's Front of Judea. Splitter!"
  • Kleptocracy - A government that increases the personal wealth and political power of the ruling class at the expense of the population. Since you hear "the rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer" all of the time, now you can respond with, "What, you think we're in a kleptocracy?"

You may not hear them all during the election process, but at least now you have some introduction to this special vocabulary and you won't be left in the dark.

The Historical Development of Christmas Carols

Imagine the Christmas season and one of the most striking memories that comes to mind is the singing of Christmas carols or the carolers coming to your door.Whether a simple chorus line of “Jingle Bells” or the more complex tunes, singing carols signals the commencement of the holiday season for many people. Many radio stations play Christmas carols frequently during the holidays, and shopping malls blast the tunes as people purchase gifts.  Though we may all know the words and sing along, have you ever wondered about the origins of these Christmas carols?  Many people have never considered when and how these songs were originally created.

Though the earliest beginnings of these songs are unconfirmed, one thing that is known is that recognizable carols can be traced back as far as the 14th century.  Christians began singing songs remembering and celebrating the birth of Jesus to Mary.  Song was a memorable way to pass on stories in a time with low literacy rates, not to mention a fun and joyous activity. Many carols conform to a refrain (verse) pattern that can be traced back to their origins, and which is still followed today.

In the 15th century, Christmas carols were beginning to be considered an art form, and musical arrangements were developed for them.  These arrangements were not only beautiful, but were complex.  A song book was published at the end of this century which detailed many of the carols.  Often, the music was written to be sung by three or four voices.  The popularity of carols then waned for several centuries, but by 1800 they were regaining their former appreciation.  In this era, many of today’s most popular carols were written.

War Time Inspiration

The War between the States was a time that inspired the writing of many hymns and carols.  When soldiers were faced with the atrocities of war, many of them turned to their faith for solace and beautiful songs came from this turmoil.  In fact, many famous Christmas carols were originally penned during the war.  “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” is a tune that was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1862.  There is sadness in the song that mirrors the sadness Longfellow must have had after the passing of his second wife.  “O Little Town of Bethlehem” was written by Phillips Brooks, who served as a pastor in Philadelphia during the course of the war.

Take a moment during this holiday season to reflect on or learn about your favorite Christmas carols. All of these charming tunes and the words that accompany them was created by people, often those who were dealing with despair.  Finding beauty and hope from their faith gave them a way to deal with their problems and have a happy Christmas.  The carols still hold messages of hope, love, and peace on Earth which are necessary to keep in mind during the trying moments of the modern world.  Keep these beautiful and faithful images in mind during your Christmas season.

Christian Family Vacations

Christian Family Camp

Family life today is very hectic.  Christian families especially find themselves busy throughout the year not only with church activities but also with work, school and sports events.  All of these are important activities but how much time do you actually spend together as a family?  Do you have time for dinner together where you can spend time in relaxed conversation?

A Christian family camp can be an answer for families who want a vacation where they can rest, relax, renew and have a great time doing so.  So many times moms and dads come back from a family vacation emotionally and physically worn out.

Planned Christian family vacations the parents don't have to use their time to decide and plan out activities, transport family members to events, or decide what restaurant appeals to everyone's taste buds.

These camps are far more affordable than the usual family vacation.  Most include all your meals and rooming for one combined price.  Except for just a few, most activities are also included.  Your pickiest eater will be able to choose whatever they want from the buffet style meals.

These camps will schedule morning Bible studies and group discussions geared for individual age groups.  This allows the afternoon free to take advantage of all the activities such as swimming, horseback riding, rafting, volleyball, softball and more.  The parents could take some rest and relaxation time just for themselves while the kids are involved in one of the many activities.

Each Bible study is geared toward encouraging spiritual growth and giving families the tools to work and grow together as a strong Christian family.

This is a time to create family memories.  Your children will be talking about this vacation for years and remembering that this was the pivotal moment in bringing your family together.  How's that for a fun family vacation?

Christian family camps have hand-picked their staff to be individuals with a "servant's" heart.  You will be impressed with the thoughtful mature attitudes and work ethic.  They will be lasting examples to your children. They are the type of young adults that you want your children to emulate.  Your child may want to return someday as a staffer and have a chance to serve others.

A Christian family vacation at a Christian family camp will be what you have been searching for in a vacation.  All the activities, accommodations, staff, speakers, meals, etc. will help create the family vacation that you desire.

Before you leave you will want to find out how to reserve a space for your family for the next year and the one after that!

Tips for the Upcoming Election: U.S. Voter Registration

If you're planning on voting in the up-coming election, you probably already know voter registration is the first step you need to take to be ready. What you may not know is exactly how and where to register to vote. If you're a U.S. citizen, you may still be a little unclear about exactly who can vote.

The good news is that voter registration is a quick and hassle-free process. Elections are one time the government actually goes out of their way to make things easy for you and ensure a good turnout. If you want to register to vote in the upcoming elections, here is some information you will need.

Who Can Register?
Simple, just about everyone. Any U.S. citizen who will be over the age of 18 by the election date is encouraged to register to vote. However, state laws do vary on this topic. In most states, convicted felons and those deemed mentally incompetent are not permitted to register to vote.

Citizenship is not always required either. Did you know that there are a few locations in the U.S. where you can vote in local elections even if you are not a citizen? If you have a permanent residency, be sure to check out whether or not you can voice your opinion in your local area.

Where to Register
These locations vary and depend a lot on where you live. Voter registration spots differ by state, county, and even city. Although state offices are the traditional locations to get your voter registration forms, more locations are becoming available.

In accordance with the National Voter Registration Act, all kinds of government offices now make forms available through several venues. These include post offices, public schools and libraries, city and county clerks offices (where you get marriage licenses and birth certificates), and even fishing and hunting license offices. The passage of the "Motor Voter" law means you can now get your forms in any motor vehicle (DMV) office too.

Another option is getting your voter registration forms by mail. Just find out which local government office provides them, call and ask them to mail your forms to you. You can fill them out and mail them back, but make sure you allow enough time before the election to get this completed. If you live in Arizona or Washington, you can even register to vote online!

Get Your Card
Now that you've gotten your forms, filled them out and mailed them in, you're registered, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, you are not officially able to vote until you receive your voter registration card. About three weeks after sending in your forms, you should get your voter registration card in the mail. Make sure you have it with you on the big day as you will need show it in order to cast your vote. It is imperative that you allow enough time to receive the registration card before the election. It would be a shame to lose your vote on a technicality.

Election News: How to Find Unbiased Election Coverage

Finding elections news coverage isn't too difficult. In fact, even several months before elections, it seems like all you hear about are the candidates and their thoughts on the issue of the moment.

Of course, just because there is an abundance if news on the upcoming elections, that doesn't mean the first thing you come across in the paper or on the TV is really useful, unbiased coverage of what matters most. It is possible to get unbiased elections coverage, but you have to put in a little effort. Here are some tips to follow as you look for elections news.

Don't rely on one source
First of all, no news medium is completely unbiased, no matter how much the editors and reporters want to be. No single newspaper, TV station, or radio station can possibly obtain every single fact and they may accidentally give more coverage to one candidate or one issue than to another. That means even if your preferred news source is usually pretty good about giving everyone fair coverage, you'll get a much better and more realistic view of things if you get your information from several sources.

Look to news media abroad
If you've ever taken a look at the foreign media's coverage of a major event in your country, you've no doubt noticed how different the presentation can be from that of the media at home. Checking out foreign news sources is a great way to get another perspective on things. You don't need to know a foreign language to do it either. Many countries have at least one English language news source (usually a newspaper) with a Web site.

Of course, you'll want to know something about that country's own policies before you take anything in their media as gospel. If they don't have good political relations with your country, they may well write off all the candidates as unqualified. Likewise, they are likely to prefer candidates who have something to offer then in terms of economic or political gains. Even so, browsing through international media can open your eyes to things you may never have noticed.

Avoid soap opera coverage
You know those magazines and TV shows that treat elections like a live soap opera? They focus on the candidate's personal life - their marriage, kids and long-past college years - instead of what those candidates actually plan to do if elected. Sadly, even some relatively respectable news media can fall into this trap because, let's face it, drama brings viewers and ratings. The fact is, though, election news sources like these might be good for a laugh (depending on your sense of humor), but they're not much use when you need straight, unbiased elections coverage.

Check for symptoms of yellow journalism
Even if your favorite news media seem to give good coverage to important elections-related issues and the candidates' beliefs about them, poor reporting on other issues should cast doubt on their elections coverage also. If the rest of the paper or TV show sinks to sensationalism or frequently slip opinions, exagerrations, or inflammatory descriptions into factual pieces, it's a sign their elections news coverage probably isn't up to par either.

Elections news is available in abundance for a good reason. In order to make a truly informed voting decision, you need access to complete, unbiased elections coverage. Choose a variety of high quality media sources to get your information from and you should be able to get all the elections news coverage you need.

The History and Development of Knight Armor

It is usually taken for granted that medieval knight armor was created in the Middle Ages. However, the history of suits of armor stretches back centuries, to the 8th and 7th centuries BC. While soldiers wore medieval knight armor in the times of King Arthur, Greek, Spartan and Gallation troops all wore at least some type of protective covering – at a minimum, a helmet and chest plate.

Chain mail, the poor soldiers’ medieval knight armor was one of the first transitionary pieces of battlefield protection. Originally developed by the Gaul’s of what are now modern France, Belgium, Switzerland and Northern Italy – it was their conquests in the East that introduced chain mail to ancient armies -- and further advancements in battlefield armor via the Roman Army -- back into Europe.

Several centuries passed, until the skill and availability of ready metal supplies began to influence suits of armor again. {By the 13th century, medieval knight armor had begun to take the shape of the modern|When the 13th century came about, medieval knight armor had started to take modern shape.} (relatively speaking) full complement of protective cover. People who had enough money to pay for it had their medieval knight armor designed to have a density of a maximum of 3 mm. Soldiers who had less money, usually the common soldiers at arms were made to buy medieval knight armor suits that were pre-made with the density of just 1 mm, and because of this they couldn't deal with all of the attacks that they had when they were at war.

Interestingly, medieval knight armor refinement led to more brutality and less sophistication in battle. In the days before more robust suits of armor, the victor was often the one more skilled with a sword in hand to hand combat. It is interesting to find out that as medieval knight armor advanced the center of attention was on causing shocking injuries to the head when the soldiers were wearing  a suit of medieval armor.

Battle Shields - The Roman Legionary Shield

While the true origin of the Roman shield remains unknown, it is generally believed to have been influenced by the early Greeks or Italians. Roman Shields were originally rectangular pieces that deflected arrows and provided a measure of protection to the wearer’s front. The artwork of this decade shows that by the 3rd century BC they seemed to have evolved into the Roman Shields.

The Roman's used two pieces of wood glued together to make their shields which resemble today's version of plywood. The shells of the Roman Shields consisted of canvas and calf skins. The top and bottom of Roman Shields were then outfitted with a metal – usually iron – edging that protected the edges in battle or when simply placed on the ground.  While in battle, a warrior would have his hand on a handle  inside the shield that would facilitate rotation in order to avoid hits from other warriors.

Roman Shields certainly gave the soldier more protection than entering battled armed only with a sword, but they could be pierced by high-velocity arrows, such as those used by Parthian archers. They could also be splintered by direct and forceful blows from a sword.

Interestingly though, Roman Shields were not meant to be used by single soldiers as nothing more than tools of battle. Roman Shields could be interlocked on the sides and top to form a protective shell over the soldiers.  When in battle and under fire, the Roman Soldiers were able to come together and interlock their shields to form a protective layer over and around themselves. Following this, the Roman soldiers could leave the protection of their Roman shield formation swiftly.  With the playing field leveled, they could engage in hand-to-hand combat with a greater degree of success.

With the odds eminently in their favor, they could swiftly disperse from the formation created by their Roman Shields and continue ground fighting.

Oil Prices Effect All Every Day Aspects

People in just about every nook and cranny in the United States are feeling the impact of higher gasoline prices that have come about as a result of increased oil prices over the last several years. Even people who don't own a car are now feeling the significant repercussions of the higher prices of gas.

Eventually, the rising price of oil will affect the price of virtually everything that a person purchases. If the item purchased happens to be made, at least in part, from a derivative of crude oil, and this can include everything from sandwich bags to fertilizer to the obvious gasoline and diesel fuel products, then as the price of oil rises, the end cost to the consumer will also rise.

By the way if you are fed up paying silly prices for your oil at the gasoline station, find out how to half your costs: "Click Here"

There have been times when the market has been able to absorb rather small increases in oil prices and the overall prices of seemingly unrelated products have remained stable. However, with the recent major surge in the price of oil, which has more than doubled over the last three years, it is difficult for manufacturers to avoid passing their increased costs along to their customers.

In addition to the increasing cost of manufacturing various goods that contain petroleum, the other factor is transportation and the rising cost of transporting goods, which is having an impact on the price of virtually everything that is sold. This includes products and materials sold to other businesses so that they can operate and produce their own products, to the final product that is sold on the store shelves or even online.

While many people are turning to shopping online in order to reduce their own gasoline consumption, they are still finding higher retail prices and they are seeing higher shipping costs. In many ways, it seems that there is just no way to avoid the price hikes and the inflation that has resulted from the high cost of crude oil that the world is experiencing at this time.

One of the renewable energy sources being developed to help reduce the reliance on crude oil are biofuels, which are produced from various grains. Biofuels have provided a viable alternative and there are now more and more vehicles on the road that burn these fuels, but the result of using grains to make this fossil fuel alternative has pushed food prices higher and higher at the same time.

There are those in the industry who say that for the time being the oil prices have more or less stabilized. However, they also say that over the next few years the upward price trend will kick in again and prices will continue to rise. Most of the industry insiders do agree that a barrel price for crude oil is not predicted to decrease by more than a percentage or two, and as a result of continued high gas prices, an increasing number of new cars will be introduced to the market that will be electric or will have better fuel efficiency.

Soaring oil prices are on everyone's mind these days. At one time you may have been able to fill up your tank for less than $50 but those times are long gone and no one knows if oil will ever reach those low prices again. But there are ways that you can save your budget. There are alternative fuels and driving practices that can keep you away from the gas pumps. It is going to take some reading on your part but it is well worth it in the end.

How Greek Helmets were Designed for Battle

Now, with the development of planes, tanks and ships, little military engagement happens up close. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC combat was primarily hand to hand using helmets simular to the style of Greek Helmets this was maintanied through the later part of the  nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

To be able to shield their troops as much as they could, the primitive Mediterranean armies created Greek Helmets that were constructed to limit any damage to head and facial area. These Greek Helmets, which were also the precursor to the armor worn by knights during the middle ages, were constructed of one or two pieces of bronze that covered a significant portion of the wearer’s face.

The Greek Helmet provided protection for the nose, cheek bones and back of the neck. There was a different style of early Greek Helmets, due to each one being hand crafted, even though the soldiers were in the same armies.

Despite their efforts to protect soldier’s heads and faces with Greek Helmets, soldiers of this era, and many to come, wore little additional protection other than a metal chest plate. Their arms, legs and even feet were often exposed when heading into battle. And, while a Greek Helmet would have provided some protection from serious head injuries, other mortal injuries were often inflected via the limbs. Soldiers who were killed in battle because of this were often usually interred with their Greek Helmet with the nose piece bent or removed to represent their death.

Helmets worn by today's soldier bares little resemblance to their greek ancestors of twenty five centuries ago, but the main purpose is still the same, to protect the head from external forces.  The change is in the weaponry used, instead of swords and spears, soldiers in the field are dodging bullets and explosives.

What are Democratic Elections Really?

Interestingly, the phrase "democratic elections" seems to come up most often in news stories from countries where fair elections are conspicuously absent. They're stories that tell of opposing candidates threatening each other with violence, whole boxes of ballots being thrown out, or scores of people being turned away from voting centers due to their ethnicity or religion.

In cases like those, many who call for "democratic elections" want nothing more than to be able to vote without fear and know their ballot will be counted. They're too busy dealing with immediate problems to look at the nuances of democracy.

At the same time, there are those who even say in countries considered highly democratic, like the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and many Western European countries, elections aren't truly fair. So what exactly does the term "democratic elections" mean anyway?

Free competition: the key to democratic elections
Fair competition and open debate are of the hallmarks of free and fair elections in any democratic country. Just because the ballot has more than one name on it does not mean there's fair competition though. If the ruling powers continually threaten opponents and opponents' supporters with reprisals, open debate is next to impossible.

Free elections are run fairly
Another major issue when it comes to democratic elections is the way the elections themselves are administered. In a fairly run election, all citizens registered to vote can do so without fear or extreme difficulty. An honest effort is made to ensure ballots are counted correctly. In countries just starting to hold elections, part of fairly running things means making sure people understand how to register to vote, where to vote, how to fill out a ballot, and other topics people in long-time democracies consider common knowledge.

No one-shot wonder elections
Democratic elections don't happen just once. In democratic countries, elections re-occur after a set period of time. For general elections, that's usually somewhere between 2 and 5 years. People, public opinion and important issues change over time so citizens are frequently given a chance to change elected officials.

Of course, it's entirely possible to elect a dictator or an elected head of state to turn into a dictator, but once that happens, the country is no longer a democracy. In this case either elections are eliminated or only sham "fixed" elections are held to maintain the farce.

Citizenship and voting rights for all
Giving "adult citizens" the right to vote doesn't mean much if the government refuses to grant full citizenship to a large portion of the population. If women or people of a certain race, ethnic group,  or religion are barred from holding full citizenship and voting, the elections are not considered fully democratic.

Truly fair and democratic elections offer considerable benefits to a country's population. When the majority of adults are free to vote without fear and have the opportunities to change or re-elect officials on a regular basis, the government is far more likely to act for the good of the people. The details of how democratic elections are run can get a little confusing but they are well worth learning about, especially for the voters.

The Changes of the Roman Helmet

Roman Helmets evolved over time from the Corinthian-style Helmets worn during the times of ancient Greece. They were also heavily influenced by the style of helmet worn by the Etruscans, who lived in what is now Italy, as well as the Gaul’s. Chainmail was introduced to the Roman military from Gual.. Roman Helmets were not designed to provide the same degree of facial protection as the early Greek Helmets that were worn in the 8th and 7th centuries BC, as their extensive protection of cheek bones, noses and foreheads led problems for soldiers with seeing and hearing during battle.

Instead, Roman Helmets were designed to provide a significant form of protection for the top and sides of the head as well as the back of the neck, in addition to serving as identification on the battle field. In fact, one of the most distinctive features of Roman Helmets is their crests. On top of the helmets were elaborate, horsehair plumes that made up the crest. Selected historical works support the theory that centurions (who commanded more than one hundred troops) carried Roman Helmet crests lengthwise, but legionnaires (soldiers on foot) bore their crests lengthwise.

Another point of differentiation for Roman Helmets was the color of the crests that various levels of the military wore.  They wore up to two or three different colors of plume, including red and white. Since the vast majority of battle in the days of Roman soldiers was hand to hand combat, senior leaders of centurions and legionnaires wore crests of a different color than common soldiers in order to ensure their visibility. While the overall style of the Roman Helmet was consistent, since everyone was crafted by hand, there was a degree of variation in style. The helmets worn by legionnaires would have been simpler in nature, with a soldier etching their name or mark into the inside of it. Centurions wore far more ornate helmets, which would have been flush with fine finish work and detail.

Sarah Palin: Not Your Typical Work At Home Mom!

If there is one thing Sarah Palin is not it is that she is not a work at home Mom. In this day and age where more and more women are trying to find ways to work from home so that they can spend more time with the kids, Sarah Palin is one step away from uprooting her whole family and moving to Washington.

One of the silliest arguments against her that I have heard is that she has no family values. The argument goes that she is not doing what is best for her family because if she gets elected then she will obviously have less time to spend with her children. What the Liberals don't get, however (and they never will), is the concept of putting your country first. Sarah Palin is in the unique position to serve her country in a capacity that no woman has ever done before. For this opportunity, she is willing to put her family second and I am sure they will be just fine with her stay at home husband in charge.

The new Liberals of the Democrat party don't care one bit about helping this country and in fact are openly embarrassed by it. The Democrats want to know what this country can do for them and not what they can do for the country. They want handouts, freebies, free health-care, social services, and anything else they can get their hands on. What they really want is Canada and socialism.

Sarah Palin is exactly what this country needs right now. She is getting more popular by the minute and has ignited a eyeglass fashion frenzy (where to buy Sarah Palin glasses), has Sarah Palin action figures, the Sarah Palin hairstyle, the Sarah Palin smile, Sarah Palin shoes (where to buy Naughty Monkey Double Dare Red Pumps),  and who knows what else, all in less than a week. If she is not an example to young girls and women then I don't know what is.

John McCain's choice of Govenor of Alaska Sarah Palin is one of the most "crazy like a fox" choices and is revitalizing the Republican's campaign and has every one talking. Sarah Palin could have never run for government office and decided to do what so many other women are doing nowadays: look for work at home jobs. Instead, she decided to see what she could do to make her state of Alaska a better place and she just might end up making America a better place as well.

The Variations of Ancient Roman Swords and Their Uses in Battle

In ancient times, Roman Soldiers entered the battlefield with an arsenal of shields, helmets and Roman swords. The Roman Empire overlapped the Iron Age, but Roman Swords are made from steel. To make the iron much stronger, carbon was added during melting; with the added benefit of making it easier to sharpen the sturdier Roman swords to a deadlier point.

Roman Swords are believed to have been inspired by the daggers used by Celtic soldiers of the ancient world such as those used by the Gauls, a barbarian race that inhabited the regions that today make up France, Switzerland, and Northern Italy.

Enemies often attacked each other with daggers, trying to stab each other in the abdomen, a strike which was usually lethal and which always disabled the enemy so that he was unable to mount a counterattack. Swords are simply long daggers, they are made longer so that the person using them can be farther away and you are less likely to get hurt.
While it is true that the Roman Swords were called the Gladius’, it is pertient to realise that the moniker can be misleading. As gladiators were not Roman Soldiers who used Roman Swords, but rather, were often slaves who fought to death in brutal games organized for public entertainment and sport.

There are four main types of Roman Swords, each named for the city that they were found in: the Gladius Hispaniesis, the Mainz, the Mainz-Fulham and the Pompeianus. The place on every sword where the blade connects with the handle is termed its hilt. Roman Sword hilts belonging to the highest ranking officers were, like their helmets, beautifully and intricately detailed, while those of the common soldier were strictly utilitarian.  Roman Swords, when not in use were kept protected in a scabbard to avoid accidental injury and protect the sharpness of the blade.

Are Cell Phones Worse Than Smoking While Driving?

There is a huge push to make talking on a cell phone while driving illegal. Many states have already passed laws that make it so. But when you think about it, what really is the reason for this attack on used Verizon cell phone users?

There are many things that people do in their car while driving which can be considered as distracting and dangerous. Smoking is an activity that is surely just as distracting as talking on your cell phone. How many times have you pulled up to a traffic light to see the car next to you with the window cracked and the person puffing away. They then have to reach out and flick the cigarette to get the used portion to fall off.

What happens when that person needs to flick the cigarette and they are actually in the process of driving? In that case, they have to maneuver to get it flicked while steering or else have that lit portion fall in their laps. Surely this is a recipe for danger equal to or greater than using Verizoncellphones! Shouldn't we be banning smoking while driving as well?

How about eating in your car? Pulling up to the drive through and then eating that burger on the way home is something that most Americans are guilty of at one time or another. Is juggling a burger full of ketchup, mustard, and mayonaise with one hand and steering with the other hand safe? Surely that activity must be banned as well right along with the cell phone use.

How many of you drive your kids in your car? Is driving a 2 year old that is crying in the back seat not extremely distracting? Children often need constant attention and that is something you cannot afford to give them while driving. Shouldn't driving with children be illegal as well?

Other things that are surely distracting are listening to the radio, listening and talking to others in the car, putting on your makeup while driving, and the list goes on and on. What makes cell phones so much different from all these other "dangerous" activities?

Using cheap Verizon cell phones with a hands free attachment is OK under all the new state laws but as I have just suggested, your attention is still split between driving and thinking and talking. It is not really that safe if you are concentrating hard on your conversation instead of the care in front of you. What makes the attack on cell phone use so acceptable when there are other driving activities that are just as distracting and dangerous? Shouldn't they all be banned. Maybe we should just ban driving altogether and mandate bicycles!

Biofuels as Alternative Sources of Energy

Biofuels are produced by converting organic matter into fuel for powering our society. More often today, these biofuels are being used as an alternative energy source to the fossil fuels that we currently depend upon. Ethanol and derivatives of plants such as sugar cane, as well as vegetable and corn oils are all included in the aresenal of different biofuels. The International Energy Agency (IEA) tells us that ethanol could comprise up to 10 percent of the world's usable gasoline by 2025, and up to 30 percent by 2050. Today, the percentage figure is two percent.

However, we have a long way to go to refine these biofuels that we are researching and they become extremely economical and practical. Oregon State University did a study that proves this concept. We have yet to develop biofuels that are as energy efficient as gasoline made from petroleum. Energy efficiency is the measure of how much usable energy for our needed purposes is derived from a certain amount of input energy. (Nothing that mankind has ever used has derived more energy from output than from the needed input. In other words, the end product is what we use as alternative energy and needs to be more efficent than the effort used to produce it.)

The OSU study found corn-derived ethanol to be only 20% energy efficient while gasoline made from petroleum is 75% energy efficient and biodiesel fuel was recorded at 69% energy efficient. However, the study did turn up one positive: cellulose-derived ethanol was charted at 85% efficiency, which is even higher than that of the fantastically efficient nuclear energy.

There are several nations which are seriously involved in the development of biofuels. Brazil happens to be the world's biggest producer of ethanols derived from sugars. The country produces approximately three and a half billion gallons of ethanol per year. The United States, while being the world's greatest oil-guzzler, is already the second largest producer of biofuels behind Brazil. The European Union's biodiesel production capacity is now in excess of four million (British) tonnes - mostly derived from rapeseed oil; soybean oil and a marginal quantity of palm oil.

Recently, oil futures have been down on the New York Stock Exchange, as analysts from several different countries are predicting a surge in biofuel availability. This would offset the value of oil, dropping crude oil prices on the international market to somewhere around $40 per barrel. The Chicago Stock Exchange has a grain futures market which is starting to “steal” investment activity away from the oil futures in NY, as investors are definitely expecting better profitability to start coming from biofuels.

Indeed, it is predicted by a consensus of analysts that biofuels shall be supplying seven percent of the entire world's transportation fuels by the year 2030. Demand for diesel and gasoline may slow down dramatically, says one energy markets analyst, if the government subsidizes firms distributing biofuels and further pushes to promote the use of eco-friendly fuel.

Should we have Nationalized Health Care?

The big debate in politics for the last 8 years or so is whether to nationalize health care. Many people feel that heath insurance and health care is a god given right and the government should take it over. The problem with that is that the government is usually a failure at whatever it does. Is the government social security system a success? No, as it will be bankrupt before I have the chance to get any of my money back. Are the government programs to help the poor a success? No, as we have just as many poor people as we ever have had. Does the government do a good job in times of tragedy? I think the victims of hurricane Katrina would answer no to that.

The only thing the government does well is to police the nation and to defend our country. Of course even that will have many people in disagreement. Why then should we ever attempt to nationalize health-care? If the government fails at almost everything it does, why on earth should we hand over the whole health care system too? The United States right now has the best health care in the world and this is evidenced by the fact that many people fly here to have their operations done. If you are in trouble health wise, the US is THE place to get the best doctors and care.

If the health care system were nationalized, finding health insurance for the self employed would no longer be a problem. Whether people had stay at home jobs or worked for big companies, they would have health insurance. That would be a good thing but what would be the quality of that care? Right now, people in Canada and Britain have to wait in line for their health care. Do you want to wait in line to see a doctor? Waiting in line is OK at the supermarket but not at a doctors office or hospital.

It is true that some people have trouble finding quality health insurance and especially self employed health insurance. Health insurance for self employed is hard to get and it is easier to get health insurance if you work for a company that offers it. However, the system works for most of us and we do have the best health care in the world. Why would we jeapardize that? If we did nationalize it, more people might have access to it but the quality would go down. There is always a price and no system that will work for every single person.

The bottom line is that there is no perfect system where everyone will have the best health care at a price they can afford. Nothing in life works that way. America was born by people who wanted to limit the influence of government in their lives. I say, leave things the way they are. We don't want to make them worse!

ATOMIC ENERGY

With the increase in world population man's energy requirement has also increased. The limit to the traditional sources of energy has made it imperative for man to find out new sources of energy. The wind, the sun, the tidal waves and the atom are some of the new and non-traditional sources of energy.

Atomic or nuclear energy is obtained by splitting the heavy nucleus (Central core of an atom) of some metals like Uranium or Plutonium or by combining light nuclei of some substances like Hydrogen or Deuterium. The process of splitting is called fission and the process of combining is called fusion.

When a nucleus of the metal Uranium or Plutonium is bombarded with a Neutron (an electrically neutral particle of nucleus), it splits. If there is sufficient amount (called critical mass) of the metal, the fission takes the form of a chain reaction as a result of which the nuclei of all the atoms split within a fraction of a second. There is violent explosion and enormous energy is released in the form of light, heat and radiation.

The chain reaction which takes place by fission in the destructive device like an atom bomb is uncontrolled. When scientists succeeded in controlling the chain reaction, it was possible to use atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Generation of atomic energy through controlled chain reaction is undertaken in a plant called atomic or nuclear reactor. In an atomic reactor heat produced by the fission is used to generate electricity. Scientists have yet not been able to control fusion.

An atomic reactor uses less fuel than a thermal power plant using coal or oil. But the reactor is costly and hazardous. An accident, as the one which took place recently at Chernobyl in Russia may spread radiation far and wide, taking a heavy toll of lives. Again, scientists have not yet found a way to dispose of the radio-active waste of an atomic reactor. Because of such risks people in many parts of the world are opposing the establishment of atomic reactors.

ELECTION DAY

An election day is the most important day in the life of a democratic nation. It usually comes once in five years. People get an opportunity to elect new representatives if they are not satisfied with the performance of the sitting candidates.

I had the good luck to witness India's ninth general elections. Our area had to elect one representative for the Lok Sabha and one for the state assembly. But there were in all seven candidates in the fray for one Lok Sabha seat and ten for the lone assembly seat.

Distribution of leaflets, appeal from blaring loudspeakers on the moving cars and jeeps, posters and banners, processions and meetings were the usual modes of canvassing. In the last few days there was door-to-door canvassing also. Representatives went from door to door and solicited votes* Sometimes, there were clashes between the supporters of rival candidates and the police had to intervene to restore peace.

The canvassing stopped 48 hours before the election day. Peace was restored. At last the much awaited election day dawned. Voting started at eight in the morning. There were long queues of voters at all polling booths. Voters went in the booth by turn. Each had his name in the electoral roll ticked. His left-hand finger was marked with indelible ink and he was given the two ballot-papers-one for the Lok Sabha seat and the other for the assembly seat. Names of all the candidates along with their election symbols were printed on the ballot papers. The voter went to a secluded corner, stamped the symbol of the candidate of his choice, folded the ballot-paper and dropped it in the sealed ballot box. There were two boxes - one for the Lok Sabha seat and the other for the assembly seat. Voting slowed down after eleven, but picked up speed after four. As the closing time neared, people rushed to the polling booths to exercise their voting rights. There were all types of voters-men and women, young and old, the disabled and the sick. An old man was brought on a stretcher to enable him to caste his vote. India is proud of such politically conscious voters who help to keep the democracy alive.

Polling stopped sharp at the stroke of six. An exciting day was over at last. Now began the guess and expectations and waiting for the results.

The Importance of Christian Counseling Centers

As a Christian we are finding it harder and harder to live in this the world at a time when we are constantly being bombarding with many temptations and negative influences. We feel we are at war with this world. A lot of broken and hurting people are in need of biblically based Christian counseling centers. Yet many Christians preach against it.

The Bible in more than one book or verse advises us to seek counsel from the wise.  The Bible goes on further to say that one is foolish not to seek wisdom from those God has placed in authority over us.

In the book of Colossians it reads "that knowledge in itself is empty." We not only need to gain knowledge from one of the many Christian Counseling centers available to us, but also apply it to our lives.  This counseling should result in a changed life, living rightly, and taking heed of the wisdom that has been imparted or it is "empty" or worthless.

There are Christian Counseling Centers that can help with the multitude of problems that face many Christians today.  There is debt counseling, career counseling, and premarital counseling to name a few. These are designed to help the Christian "live a life worthy" and to be "strengthened."

Receiving godly wisdom from the Bible is the best way to overcome a seemingly unbearable situation.  Christian counseling centers should be the place for a Christian to head a the first sign of a problem.

If you are one of the broken, or a Christian couple desiring to get married, a couple already married, or if you are struggling with singleness or striving to have better relationships in your family, contact one of these sources of Christian for counseling. Seek out one that has been recommended to you and most importantly, Biblically based. You are an important member of the Christian body. It is important to get the help and healing needed. Someday you may in turn be able to help someone else through your testimony of recovery.

Windmill Power - Make Windmill

Earth4Energy is a guide that explains how to reduce the cost of your electricity and switch to an environmental way of using energy. We, all hear the talk about the Presidential Candidates promise to concentrate on producing energy. Of course, there are different alternative energy options, which include biofuel, electricity windmill, solar energy and renewable energy. No matter, which one you choose, you will be able to save on your gas and electric bill.

This instruction guide makes an attempt to show you how to build your own residential windmills or some call it electricity windmills. With the step by step instructions, the guide promises to help you to eliminate or reduce your electric bill.

One of the main issues of having a homemade electrical supply is the high cost of installation of the system that needs to be put in place. You may end up paying up to $20,000 for one of these wind powered systems and it would take up to 15 years to see the real savings. When you make your own windmill, solar panel or wind turbine, your cost would be no more than $200. The returns on savings will be experienced sooner - in a matter of weeks.

What you receive:

You will be able to download Earth4Energy instantly. The guide consists of 73 pages that you can print and read at your leisure or read directly from your computer monitor.

What Kind of Skills and Tools are Needed:

All you need are some basic handy-man skills with tools that most homeowners use such as an electric drill, hammer, saw, screw driver, paint and jigsaw. That is about it.

You will have to hire an electrician who is licensed if you want to connect your solar or wind generator to the wiring system in your home to run your appliances. However, an electrician would be able to do so quite easily and it would still save you a lot in the long run.

How Long does It Take To Build?

All it will take is a weekend once you have purchased the materials required. One week is the maximum time it would take for someone who had an average set of skills.

The Disadvantages:

The guide does not give an EXACT step by step action on how to make windmills or solar panels that the author has built.

However, the author does indicate in the Earth4Energy, that you may not find the exact parts that were used in his wind generator project. Therefore, what the guide does is to give you an understanding of the concept with building your own wind generator so you will be better able to adapt the principle. There were some details that were missing, which annoyed me. There was nothing said about mounting solar panels to the roof of the house neither was it clear how to mount the wind generator and assemble the blade. It may be more obvious as you start the building process, I guess.

The other thing I thought the author could have done was to include a video with the guide. I have yet to find a video that has been done about this topic. A video presentation is quite likely to give more hands-on and visual demonstration than the written word can do by itself.

With the pages of Earth4Energy, there are a couple of chapters that contained a bunch of fluff about ethanol and reducing your independence on oil, which we already know and that is why you are here, right?

The Advantages:

The guide is concise, clear, easily understood and quite simple. When reading this guide, it is apparent that the author has indeed built his own solar, electric windmill and other wind generator. So he is not writing from fiction, but from experience.

The guide does have a lot of diagrams, pictures and illustrations that do a good job of making things more clear and understandable. The guide is readily downloadable immediately after purchases. I was able to grab a copy at a low discounted price of just $49.97, which is quite reasonable since this is specific information that you won't be able to get readily. $49.97 is minuscule when you think of how much money you will save in the long run. This is quite a small investment for a life saving of thousands of dollars on electricity.

Customer Support:

Of course, when you buy anything, you always want to know that you are getting good customer support. Earth4Energy provides an email address for any technical questions. On the website, you will be able to access free updates of the product. Within July 2008 alone, there were six updates posted online.

Money Back Guarantee: Earth4Energy has an offer of 60 day money back guarantee.

Cost: My copy was on sale for $49.97 USD

Conclusion:

I highly recommend earth4energy to anyone who wants to make your own windmill, solar panel or wind powered generator to save on electricity. I give this guide a rating of 9.9 out of 10. It is the best one by far that is currently on the market.

This guide is very economical and excellent for providing the right information to creating any of these energy-saving devices. The author could have sold it for more money and it is because of all of these reasons that I feel comfortable in highly recommending earth4energy.

Discovering a Jewish Dictionary

A Hebrew or a Jewish dictionary is simply a dictionary which lists Hebrew words. The confusion comes in because a lot of people consider that Jewish and Hebrew are synonamous with each other. In fact, it is only with the introduction of the internet that the term Jewish Dictionary has come into use at all.

Therefore, although I am using Jewish dictionary for the purpose of this article, I am also including Hebrew dictionary. This hopefully will cover many of the bases which are needed.

It may be argued, that a Jewish dictionary not only contains Hebrew words, but also contains any other words which are associated with Judaism or even Yiddish words as well. This arguement actually works fairly well, although it is likely that a true Hebrew dictionary would contain many of them also. The best thing that you can do is to check the dictionary that you are using to see what it says.

Finding a dictionary online which translates English words into Hebrew is not such a difficult thing. However, the difficulty arises when you are trying to translate from Hebrew into English. This is because Hebrew uses a different font typeface and it is actually extremely difficult from a programming point of view to do so. There are a few though, and if you do a search on Google then you are bound to find one. My favorite one unfortunately is a dictionary which I use in the offline world which has not so far made it to be an online Jewish dictionary.

My last piece of advice that I would give you when trying to find a decent Hebrew translation of a word is to ensure that you translate from English to Hebrew and then translate that word back again from Hebrew to English. In that way you will be sure that you are not actually using the wrong word which can lead to embaressment!

Historically Accurate Greek Helmets and How They Evolved

Greek helmets is a term that encompasses quite a few specific styles of headgrear.  This includes the Corinthian and Thracian among others.  Developed during the 7th century bc, they were used well in the early ad's during the rapid expansion and take over of Greece and had a life span of over 500 years.

Greek Helmet Unique Designs

Greek helmets are known by many different distinct types of helmets and these include the Corinthian, Illyrian, Chalcidian, Pilos, Petasus, Beotian, and Thracian. Of course, as the head is the most important part of the body, these war helmets were made to specifically provide ample protection to that area.|Helmets were often forged out of one piece of metal, usually bronze, and were made to give protection to the head, cheek, nose, as well as overall padding to the head. The Corinthian, Chalcidian, Pilos, Petasus, Beotian, and Thracian helmets were created with two distinct parts of metal, while other designs such as the Spartan helmet was made from one piece of metal, making it more difficult to forge.

Putting on a Greek Helmet for Battle

When the fight was about to begin, soldiers would bring the helmet over the face and head to provide resistance to sword blows and enemy missle fire, such as arrows. When the soldiers were marching or just sitting around the file at the battle cample, the chinstrap allowed them to just slip the helmet off the back of the head.

Changes of the Greek Helmet through Time

By historians and archeologists, the Greek Corinthian helmet is thought to be one of the earliest designs of the helmet.  But, because of the need to have thick metal covering most of the head and face, it was very hard to see out of it. So, through the years, the helmet was modified and upgraded to be more effective.  Other types of helmets such as the Thracianor became increasingly popular because they provided more visability. And, because these greek helmets provided less facial protection, they were less detailed and required less bronze -- making them cheaper and easier to manually produce in large quantities.  Do to the hand-made nature of these items, it was important to make production less labor intensive so that thousands of soldiers could wear them.

EARTHQUAKES

Floods, cyclone, storm, drought, excessive rain, fire, lightning and earthquakes are natural calamities. Of all these natural calamities the earthquake is the most disastrous and strikes great terror in the hearts of its victims.

Sudden and violent shaking of a part of the earth's surface is called an earthquake. If the earthquake is mild and of moderate intensity there are mild tremors lasting only for a few seconds. It causes little or no damage. But a severe earthquake causes tremors of great intensity lasting for a few minutes and can cause great damage.

Earthquakes are caused from the cracking of rocks forming the earth's crust on account of some internal pressure or force.

An earthquake is a terrifying sight and a horrifying experience. With the rumblings of the first tremor, terror-stricken people rush out of their houses and shelters in great panic. Houses, dams and other structures are rocked and they tumble down like houses of cards. Those who are not alert and caught unawares are crushed under falling structures or are buried under the debris. Roads and bridges crack, railway lines are twisted and uprooted. Water pipes, electric lines and gas mains are damaged. Fire and floods are the other two great dangers accompanying a severe earthquake because of the damage caused to electric lines or gas mains and because of a breach in dams. Sometimes there may be volcanic eruption from which red-hot lava gushes out and totally destroys villages and cities in its way. In such a case thousands or even lakhs of people perish. There is colossal loss of life and property.

Earthquakes usually come without any prior notice or signal and cannot be predicted. Nor is there any way to prevent them. In spite of all the scientific inventions and discoveries, man is just like a helpless child in the face of this natural calamity. The recent earthquake in Armenia (Russia) which took a heavy toll of more than one lakh people demonstrates this fact.

Into the downwave -revisited

Travelling across the North of England the problems of the world's finance markets seem both a million miles away and yet at times close to hand. Two of the regions largest banks have effectively been nationalised and jobs are at risk or indeed have been lost.

Currently we are staying in a bed and breakfast in Carlisle which is just north of the English Lake District. It's a largely agricultural community so there is more permanence and less change being talked about.  However what i really wanted to talk about is history repeating itself. In our luggage is a copy of a 20 year old book by Robert Beckman called "Into the upwave". This was published in 1988 just after the crash of 87. Remember back then when computers were largely for geeks and no one had heard of microsoft? Anyway i will summarise some of the issues he raises below and then address the key areas in more detail in later blogs.

Beckman starts off by introducing Kondratyev who started off his career as a Russian agricultural economist in the days before the Russian revolution. He was the first person to identify the major long term business cycles. The success of his work came too late to offer any compensation as he then died in a Siberian labour camp.

The cycles he talked about were longer than any previously studied.Basically he saw four cycles as follows

Each peak corresponded with a war

1814 ( Naopleonic wars)

1864 ( Civil war in America)

1920 ( WW1)

1973 ( Vietnam)

( notice that WWII helped start the rise out of the depression of the 1930's...but it was nowhere near a peak)

and the troughs were

1843

1894

and

1934

So you can see where he was coming from. He expected the cycle to bottom in the early 90's and to then grow strongly, hence his title of "into the upwave".

if the previous cycle frequencies were followed then the next peak would be around 2030 to 2040. So does this mean that the current malaise is just a blip on rising markets or maybe the introduction of computerised trading combined with the complicated financial derivatives has shortened the cycle lengths.

Also, and perhaps more worryingly after each peak there was a sharp fall followed by a minor secondary recovery and then just a long long drop in the markets.

So having established the background what else does Beckman talk about?

Maybe a few quotes will help here.

Very early on he established his pedigree by talking about his time on the trading floor. He then recounts meeting Charlie Meyer an old timer. Two days before the crash of 29 Charlie had said

"Too many dummies are getting rich.I'm getting the hell out"

He then goes on to quote from Warren and Pearson's "The price series"

"Economic changes, drastic in character, occurred with such rapidity that it was difficult for the human mind to forsee them or even to grasp the significance of the changes after they occur".

Anyway more to come in later blogs but for the moment we are looking on the map towards the coast of Northumberland and wondering about renting a self catering cottage in Seahouses.

RISING PRICES

Prices have been rising steadily since Independence. But they have been rising faster during the last ten or fifteen years.

Rising prices called 'inflation' in economics cause worry to the government and hardships to people. Rising prices upset all estimates of income and expenditure made by the government.

Cost of all government projects, plans and administrative expenditure goes on increasing with the rising prices. For example, a dam which is estimated to cost Rs. 100 crores may cost Rs. 500 crores by the time it is completed. So the government has to provide more money for its projects. To provide more money it has to levy more taxes on people or to print more notes. Both these steps would cause additional burden to the people. Again, both these steps would raise the prices still higher, causing still more hardships to the people.

To mitigate the hardships caused by rising prices, people want more money. Employed people demand higher wages. If the employers do not agree to their demands, they go on a strike. If the employers agree to give more wages or salary, their cost of production increases and this results in still higher prices. More spending by people would almost raise prices. Thus there is a vicious circle. Prices push up costs and costs push up prices.

Is there no way oat? There is. But it requires a strong government to take some strong measures which the people may not like for the time being. Government must put a stop to all salary or wage rises. This would stabilize costs to some extent. Government should stop printing more notes and must reduce its expenditure drastically. This will prevent prices from going up. Production should be increased. For this there should be at least a decade of hard and disciplined work and industrial peace. All strikes and lock-outs should be banned for at least a decade. Lastly, government must take steps to stabilize the prices of food and agricultural products, because in an agricultural country like India, the whole price structure of other products stands on the prices of farm products.

Though people may at first resent these measures, they will appreciate and welcome them when they enjoy the fruits of these measures after a decade or so, when the prices will be stabilized.

Can You Benefit From Renewable Energy?

Every time the price of power goes up (which seems to be every month at the moment), more and more people start to think about whether they should be using renewable energy to supplement their regular power supplier.

What type of renewable power you opt to use will very much depend on where you are in the world. If you live in a fairly sunny part of the world, you'll likely decide to use solar energy.

If you're in a colder part of the world, it's more likely that you'll turn to wind power instead.

Each of these has advantages and disadvantages.

Pretty obviously, solar power only works in daylight, even if it doesn't need full sunlight nowadays. If you live in a hot climate, the sun will be shining at the time you most need your power for air conditioning and other such items. If you're further north then the benefits of solar power may be less, although we still use power in the summer months, when output will be higher, or providing extra light in your garden for those evenings where it isn't too chilly to stay outside.

Likewise, wind turbines need at least a breeze in order to operate but there is almost certainly a safe range of windspeeds that it operates in - if the wind is too slow you'll get no power, if it blows too fast the turbine may struggle to keep up. Wind power also brings with it occasional times of no wind at all, so you'll need a battery or regular power connection for such times. This also makes it harder to go "off grid" for your power needs if you rely solely on wind power.

Once you've decided on the type of renewable energy you want, the next decision is whether to buy an off-the-shelf product or go for DIY renewable energy. You can get a set of comprehensive renewable energy instructions to help take you down this path if you like, there's also a big advantage that DIY renewable energy will typically cost hundreds of dollars less than shop bought equivalents.

Looking for Christian Counseling Courses

Christian Counseling

If you feel the Lord is leading into the area of counseling there are many Christian counseling courses available.  Your local community college may offer Christian counseling courses, or a Christian college or also many may be available online.  If a person or couple are seeking Christian counseling they usually look into a counselor who has earned a counseling degree from a reputable source.

Is Christian Counseling God Directed?

Many pastors and others in the clergy believe that counseling is a gift from God. I am sure most Christians would agree with that statement. Even though that may be true, it is still advisable to receive some education in this area. Having a license, degree or other type of certification lends credibility to your chosen career. It would also provide insights into various situational problems and human behavior.

Christian Education & Certification

In the Old Testament men were required to be anointed and ordained into ministerial leadership. In Leviticus chapter eight it describes the ordination of Aaron and his sons by Moses.

"The Lord said to Moses , 'Bring Aaron and his sons, their garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams and the basket containing bread made without yeast, and gather the entire assembly at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.' Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting." (NKJ)

This chapter goes on to describe in detail the whole ceremony required before these men could be considered as priests. In the same way a person desiring to serve in ministry today needs to be acknowledged as an ordained servant, anointed by the Lord, whatever area of ministry he may be serving in. Moses and his sons had earned their education in human behavior during the many years they traveled together after leaving Egypt. Likewise the Christian counselor today needs to earn his or her degree and be certified.

Seeking Christian Counseling for Debt

Finding the perfect Christian financial counselor may be as easy as asking your pastor.  Someone who has been well educated in the financial field is best. You may be interested in going into the field of Christian counseling and if you are have worked in the financial world this may be a great direction for you.

Any type of counseling service can be costly.  You want to be sure that the Christian counseling center you choose comes highly recommended.  There may be free Christian counseling debt services offered at your church.

Do Your Research

It is a blessing to have individuals that are obeying the Lord's calling by helping their fellow Christians in whatever area they may need counsel. It is also vitally important to get your education from a reliable, accredited Christian college. If you are seeking advice from a professional Christian counselor please verify that your counselor has received their certification through a qualified and accredited Christian counseling course and how experienced they are in the Christian counseling field.

Get On Top of Your Game Mentally and Physically, Before It's Too Late

Mental disipline comes from physical disipline

Not very long ago, if you wanted to compete for a decent job, or even for a spouse, all there was to worry about was competition in the local community. Now thanks to the Internet, you’re competing with the entire country. Soon, you’ll be competing with the entire world. Don’t dismiss this, it’s already happening. Millions of people in developing countries are learning English- and not just for the fun of it. They want their shot at the American Dream.

In my very humble opinion, life in these United States could soon diverge into two very broad classes: Those that want someone to take care of them because they can’t compete in a global playing field- and those that have learned the discipline to take matters into their own hands and do what they have to do to succeed- by disiplining themselves physically first. This is why I’m suggesting it would be a good time to get on top of your game in all parts of life. [Unless of course you think things are somehow going to get less competitive in the future.]

I’m not trying to get political here, however, I can imagine few worse fates than  this: Standing in line and having the government decide how big of a piece of the pie they think I deserve [or how big of a piece they think they can afford to dish out]. Would you call that freedom? I’d call it being a slave to the consequences of your actions. I’m really going to risk offending a few people here, but think about this: Many employers now have a global workforce to choose from. Let’s say we get lucky and a job opening comes down to two American candidates. Everything is equal, except for one thing. One candidate is fit and the other is seventy overweight.

If both applicants had the same qualifications [and health care costs weren’t even factored in] who do you think will be hired? Who would you hire? In my opinion the person that looked more disciplined would get the job. Discipline says hard working. Discipline says integrity. Fat may not be lazy, however many people perceive it that way. I’m not trying to upset you! I’m not saying it’s fair! I just want you to think about the big picture. Maybe I’m totally wrong. Heck, I almost hope I’m wrong. I’d have no problem being totally off base on this one.

However, if you think there’s the slightest possibly I could be right. Then think about life twenty or thirty years from now- and get on top of your game physically right now. Doing that will get you on top of your mental game faster than anything. And do it before it becomes obvious that’s what everyone who doesn’t want to be in the pie handout line realizes that’s exactly what they have to do. Think about it, if you don't have the disipline to pass up a soda- are you really all that ready to handle everything the future might throw at you?

What do you have to lose? Worst case you transfrorm your future into what you want it be. Best case, you're prepared for a more challanging life.

Alternative Energy Of The Future

Alternative energy is quickly becoming more prominent nowadays, and environmental concern is no longer just reserved for the tree huggers. People are starting to wake up and realize that our planet is slowly being destroyed by pollution and a lack of responsibility for the environment. Alternative energy is slowly emerging as a viable industry, and it is not yet clear which companies have the best solutions for the future. This actually makes the alternative energy sector ideal for Exchange Traded Funds, which are ideal for spreading risk among the stocks of various companies and technologies. This Earth4Energy review explains how you can make an impact by yourself. There may also be future technologies for the transformation of coal to a clean source of energy.

Alternative energy sources must be developed so that everyone on Earth can have reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly ways to run their cars, power their manufacturing plants, and heat and cool their businesses, schools, and homes. Alternative energy simply describes energy sources that are used as an alternative to fossil fuels. Earth 4 Energy is a manual that will let you generate electricity on your own. Generally speaking, it indicates energies that are nontraditional and have a small impact on the environment. Alternative energy technologies such as photovoltaics, wind turbines or biofuels attempt to harvest the abundance of nature's power.

The renewed interest in this field of study comes from the undesirable effects of pollution (which can be seen all over the world), both from burning fossil fuels and from nuclear waste byproducts. Alternative energy is a long term growth industry. As the economies of the world continue to grow, energy consumption will rise. It is not even that much more expensive to build an energy efficient house or automobile. Alternative energy grants from national governments can act as a driving force in developing viable alternative energy for our daily consumption.

Solar energy continues to have potential, but it is not quite yet economically viable, nor will it be able to supply more than a small fraction of our energy use for another 10-20 years. The Review Earth4Energy site is dedicated to informing the public about how they can save the environment. Solar panels can provide plentiful power during the long hours of summer sun, but wind generators should be added to help support these systems through the winter months. Solar energy would obviously be a key part of achieving full energy independence.
