The Various Types of Roman Weapons

The soldiers of Ancient Rome used a variety of weaponry during battles for fighting and their own defense  The Romans used helmets to protect their heads during battle.  In medieval time,'Galea'- the Roman helmets are more famous than any other helmets.  Romans used different types of helmets made of different metals, such as iron or brass, and different designs.  Gladius is a sword which was a popular weapon and it was short and had a wide blade mainly used  by the Romans and it  was curved too.  Roman shields were constructed of iron and copper in a variety of shapes including round, oval and rectangular.  Made mostly of iron and leather, Romans would wear body armor to protect their bodies.  The Romans used many weapons, one of which was a stiff and ornamental sword called a dagger.

Three different types of spears were also used by Romans in wars.  Two handed lances with thrusting shapes, shaped a light weight and javelin type of spear.  The spears consist of a long pole made of wood and were conical in shape at the end which was made of iron or brass for durability and strength.  They also used heavy javelins called Pila, which were long rod made of iron and were pyramid shaped.  Romans also carried darts in battle.   Roman weapons used by ancient Romans is the bow and arrow, made as a wooden shaft with an iron head.

The swords which were mainly used by the Roams were called as 'Spatha' and those swords which were smaller are called as 'Semispatha'  The armour which protected the Roams was Chain mail armour and its really strong since its ususally made up of brass or iron  These armours were more comfortable and protective than the armour worn during war times.  For increased comfort in battle, armours were worn over leather coats or another type of durable coat.
